Providing diet and nutrition advice in the dental setting is crucial for promoting oral and overall health. Dental practices are increasingly recognising the vital connection between nutrition, overall well-being, and oral health.

As part of a holistic approach to patient care, many practices now offer support and guidance on diet and nutrition, emphasising their role in preventing oral diseases such as caries and periodontal disease, as well as systemic conditions like diabetes.

This expanded care often includes assessments like blood pressure monitoring and blood sugar testing, which provide valuable insights into a patient's general health and its impact on their oral condition. To empower patients, practices provide personalised diet sheets and nutrition information, helping them make informed choices to improve their dietary habits.

The course will consist of 10 modules covering the following topics –

1) Introduction
2) Basics of Nutrition
3) Diet, special diets and the patient's oral health
3) Mental health and well- being – effects on oral health
4) Dietary advice for patients and products for oral health well- being
5) Blood Pressure and Blood sugar taking and recording and the relevance to oral health
6 Managing Dental conditions through diet
7) Smoking and alcohol – advice on giving up
8) Nutrition and Dental health - across a lifespan
9) Public health and nutrition
10) Dental Nurses role in promoting Diet and Nutrition in the Dental setting

Each module will have an assignment at the end, for the student to complete.
